Prime Water point of use membrane filters offer purification solutions for

Depending on the application Prime Water point of use membrane filters are equipped with:

hollow fiber micro-filtration membranes for the removal of bacteria and cysts
hollow fiber ultra-filtration membranes for the removal of bacteria, cysts and viruses.

For certain applications the membrane filters can be combined with activated carbon for the removal of dissolved contaminants that affect taste and odor.

Although central water purification in many countries is very effective, the water delivered is not sterile. Bacteria survive and multiply in water distribution systems, which leads to a decrease in water quality. Arrears in maintenance of distribution systems can lead to dangerous situations as surface water can mix with purified water.

Old houses and apartment buildings often are provided with lead piping, which slowly disintegrate and make it necessary to remove the lead ions from the water at the point of use.

Safe and healthy showering at home

Drinking water in many developed countries has stingently controlled standards. Therefore it is difficult to imagine that water for human use, delivered through taps and shower heads, could contain harmful pathogens.

However bacteria such as the Legionella Pneumophilia (see more information on Legionella) occur naturally in surface water and are frequently found in shower plumbing. Chlorine is added to eliminate bacteria, but has no effect on Legionella and Cysts. Residuals of chlorine and other chemicals remain and potentially cause adverse health and cosmetic effects.

Tap water is not sterile and bacteria will multiply in water dispensers, intended to cool and carbonate tap water.

To prevent growth of bacteria in the system and to eliminate possible bad taste of the tap water, a combination of activated carbon and membrane filter (Dual Stage C) can be applied at the point of entry of the tap water.

To prevent back growth of bacteria from the dispensing nozzle, an In Line membrane filter can be applied.

Bacteria such as the Legionella Pneumophilia and Mycobacterium Avium (both 0,5 – 0,7 µm) occur naturally in surface water and are frequently found in shower plumbing. The bacteria can reproduce themselves to high levels in the slimy layer (bio-film), which forms on the inside of water pipes filled with stagnant or slow moving warm water.

Legionella Pneumophilia

Situations like that are found in the plumbing of large buildings as hospital, nursing homes, dormitories, apartment buildings, hotels, sports centers, camping’s and vacation homes in warm climates, that are occupied only part of the year.

Legislation prescribes that there shall be no stagnant water in shower plumbing and that moreover regular disinfection of the plumbing must be carried out. Quite often structural adaptations appear to be impractical or impossible and despite all measures taken bio-film is extremely difficult to eradicate once established and the presence of the legionella bacteria persists.

Filtration at the point of use is therefore an obvious solution.

Prime Water’s focus is safe water at the point of use when needed. Once installed, and in case of need, the PW shower handles can be retrofitted with a membrane micro filter that stops all bacteria, including Legionella Pneumophilia. It provides protection, even if the problem persists for several months.
